	The Russian Matryoshka (I.E. -nesting doll, stacking doll) is a symbol of motherhood and fertility, handmade from wood and probably the most popular Russian souvenir. Subsequently, it has become a symbolic name and is used especially to create brightly painted wooden figurines crafted in such a way that they can taken apart to reveal smaller dolls fitting inside one another. The faces display lovely maidens. Skilled artists from rural Russia bring the traditional village scenes and ornaments to life. The magic of folk art and nature come alive in brilliant color. The Matryoshka depicts the essence of life, and gives women a name. Scholars say this name contains the latin root “mater” and means “Mother.” This name is associated with the image of a mother of a large peasant family who was very healthy and had a portly figure. The process of doll manufacturing has changed little over the last century, the best material being soft and easily workable linden. Trees are cut in April for juicy wood, which are then stripped of their bark, the ends covered with clay to avoid flaws. Before coming to the turner, blanks are patiently aged in the open air for two long years to enable the shaft to dry to the core.
