	The painters develop a realistic perception, and their works display quite a variety of palettes, which is also subtle: the effect is picturesque, ornamental and decorative. Against light blue, pink, golden and orange backgrounds, the delicate color combinations in the main drawing glitter and glow. Traditionally, the Mstera miniature depicts cliffs, small mountains, or hills, architectural details and fantastic decorative foliage as its basic forms and themes. Artists grind their own pigments out of colored pebbles in the Msterka river. Their miniatures are characteristically done in pale tones, usually on an ivory background. Colors are commonly mute, and fgures are shown against backgrounds of light blue or other pastel sgades, landscapes predominating: the overall effect is that of a "Persian tapestry".
